A focus on students, research and service
Building on two centuries of strength
IU has a record of leading innovation and advancing research and partnerships throughout the region that has continued during Whitten’s tenure. IU has expanded its commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging; renewed its commitment to fighting climate change; and also prioritized improving the economy and health of people in Indiana and across the country and world.
Establishing a university-wide strategic plan framework
IU 2030 is a framework for developing seven-year plans and emphasizes three areas of concentration: student success and opportunity, transformative research and creativity, and service to our state and beyond. These interconnected spheres will form the foundation for IU's future.
Expanding commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
The seven-year Presidential Diversity Hiring Initiative focuses on hiring from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education, with the ambition of increasing their representation among faculty.
Transforming to IU Indianapolis
The innovative realignment plan transformed IUPUI into the state's next-generation urban research university, Indiana University Indianapolis. Through IU Indianapolis, we will enhance academic programs, advance science and research capabilities, and expand funding opportunities for groundbreaking ventures.
Assembling an exceptional leadership team
IU President Whitten established the university's first Vice President of Student Success position and created the role of Vice President for Regional Campuses and Online Education to ensure IU prioritizes students and provides focused strategic leadership for IU's five regional campuses and online programs.
Increasing access to an excellent education
An Academic Tuition and Fees Task Force was established to develop recommendations to simplify the process of setting undergraduate tuition and fees, to ensure more transparency for students around the rates, and to find ways to minimize overall costs of attendance for students. IU also announced reductions in costs and other barriers to increase opportunities for students interested in attending regional campuses.
Supporting students' mental health
IU has renewed its focus on student mental health through a new Student Mental Health Initiative. As part of the initiative, IU created a new online home for mental health and well-being services to support students across the state. Ongoing efforts focus on three key areas: Culture and climate, services and support, and policies and protocols.
Renewing IU's commitment to sustainability
A new Climate Action Planning committee is engaged in developing comprehensive recommendations to identify short- and long-term opportunities to reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emissions from the university's various campuses and units.
