A research mission built for collaboration and impact
Accelerating innovation: Meet IU Inc.
IU Inc. is a newly launched nonprofit designed to strengthen the university’s partnerships with industry and government. It leverages faculty expertise to solve real-time problems, spur economic growth, and provide hands-on learning for students.
The organization has three core subsidiaries: the IU Applied Research Center (ARC), supporting national security through applied R&D and talent development; the IU Launch Accelerator for Biosciences (IU LAB), the university’s life science innovation initiative; and IU Realty, which activates non-academic real estate to generate revenue and anticipate real estate needs that support IU’s mission and vision.
Key resources available to researchers and entrepreneurs
IU combines the scale of a premier R1 institution—including the nation's largest medical school—with support for faculty at every phase of research and innovation.
Hands-on experience from the start
IU undergraduates do research that changes lives—from campus-based research teams to real-world learning experiences that build skills and connections, including:
- Layered-Learning Program for Undergraduate Researchers (university-wide): A scalable mechanism to incentivize faculty to expand research by facilitating layered learning, engaging postdocs, and graduate and undergraduate students, in high-impact research or creative activity.
- 1st Year Research Immersion Program (1RIP) (IU Indianapolis): A year-long, team-based research experience for first-year students paired with a faculty mentor.
- Experiential Learning Activities (ELAs) (IU Bloomington): Learning beyond the classroom through research and creative activity, cultural immersion, leadership, and community engagement.
